17th Gathering of Bosnia and Herzegovina Supplementary Schools

25.06.2015

17th traditional meeting of Bosnian and Herzegovinian supplementary schools took place earlier this month at Derby Moor Community Sports College premises. Meeting itself was characterized by the guests as one of the best organized so far and will be remembered for the fact that the entire program has been prepared in memory of the victims killed in the Srebrenica genocide exactly 20 years ago.

First guests started arriving at 10am, both local and guests from other cities as well as supplementary schools from Birmingham, Coventry, London Victoria, Hertfordshire and Manchester. There were some important guests amongst them His Excellency Mustafa Mujezinovic, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the UK and Republic of Ireland, Mayor of the City of Derby Mr. Paul Pegg and president of the charity organization "Remembering Srebrenica", Dr Waqar Azmi OBE.

Remembering Srebrenica is the organiser of the UK events for the EU-designated Srebrenica Memorial Day, which takes place annually on 11 July. It runs a tailored education programme called Lessons from Srebrenica, which sees groups of delegates visit Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aim is to teach delegates the lessons of the country’s grim past to better inform the present. Alongside this, the charity conducts an awareness raising campaign, which is aimed at countering discrimination and building stronger community relations.

At the beginning of the program, the guests were addressed by Mr. Ferid Kevric who welcomed the guests and introduced them with the ordinance which was followed by the playing of Bosnian and Herzegovinian and British national anthems, after which Mr. Kevric invited the audience to a minute of silence and Fatiha remembering the victims who were killed in Srebrenica. From this point on, the program was led by Ajsa Bjelobrvic and Merima Kadralija, former pupils of Bosnia and Herzegovina Supplementary School in Derby.

Delivering short speeches, attendees were addressed by the president of our association in Derby Nermina Webster and president of BiH UK Network, Mr. Sabit Jakupovic followed by a speech from His Excellency Mr. Mustafa Mujezinovic, who expressed his gratitude for the invitation and spoke about the importance of such meetings and preservation of identity. After the ambassador we were addressed by the mayor of the city of Derby, Mr. Paul Pegg who also sent a clear message to our youngsters about the importance of identity, culture and traditions, regardless of the fact that they were born in this country.

The last speech before the beginning of the school presentations was delivered by Dr Waqar Azmi OBE, President of the charity organisation Remembering Srebrenica. Dr Azmi spoke about the importance and moral duty of us all to remember what happened in Srebrenica towards the end of last century. School presentations followed Dr. Azmi’s speech and first on the stage was Supplementary School from Derby. During a very rich program, pupils of this school also read the chronology of the events in Srebrenica that happened between 5th and 16th July 1995.

After Derby it was the turn of Supplementary School from Hertfordshire followed by our neighbours from Birmingham and Coventry and then London Victoria. School from Manchester was last in order and very small in numbers but that did not stop them from getting perhaps the greatest applause for their performance.

Following school performances, traditional dance groups “Bosnian Pearls” from Derby and “Mladost Bosne” from Birmingham took to stage and showcased some great dancing skills to the amusement of all visitors.

At the end of the morning session, representatives of all supplementary schools were given a thank you certificate for participating in celebration of the 17th meeting of Bosnia and Herzegovina Supplementary Schools followed by an hour long break for the buffet after which we all moved to sports fields.

As for the sport, we had four disciplines in 50 meters running and five-a-side football tournament that was played on a "round robin" basis. In the competition of girls under nine years old, first place went to Hana Ceric from Birmingham while Lejla Karic, also from Birmingham, won first place in running for the girls over nine years of age. As for boys, Deen Gopo from Derby won first place for boys up to nine while Fahrudin Dergic from Birmingham was the fastest of the boys over nine years of age.

As I stated above, football tournament was played on a "round robin" basis, and each team has played against other after which points were calculated. Referees Almedin Hrncic and Nedzad Osmanagic with the help of Ohran Subasic and Cerim Alija made sure everything was running smoothly.

Most successful team and also the winner of this tournament was the team from Hertfordshire with all five wins. Second place went to Coventry with four wins and one defeat. Due to equal points Derby and Birmingham had to play again for third place in which Derby won 2:0.

At the end of football tournament all winners were presented with medals for first, second and third place in each of the above competitions as well as the winning team trophy, trophy for the best player and top scorer trophy which this time went to Suhret from Coventry with nine goals.

Also, awards were handed out for the best art and literacy work which have been evaluated by an independent commission and to our satisfaction, both honours and first place went to students from our supplementary school in Derby, Emina Hrncic won an award for best literacy work and Amela Subasic for best art work.

At the end, we would like to thank all those who came and made this meeting bigger, firstly His Excellency, the Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina in London Mustafa Mujezinovic, the Mayor of the City of Derby, Councillor Paul Pegg, president of the organization Remembering Srebrenica Dr. Wagar Azmi OBE, Associate Principal Derby Moor Community Sports College Mike Shales, President of UK Network Sabit Jakupovic, president of Derby Bosnia Herzegovina Community Association Nermina Webster, Event Coordinator Rob Holmes, Supplementary Schools from Derby, Manchester, Birmingham, Hertfordshire, Victoria London and Coventry.

Special thank you goes to Alma Pasic, Hatidza Haticic, Ramiza Whitmore, Chris Algie, Amra Kapetanovic, Ismeta Hanjalic, Vernesa and Ohran Subasic, Rabija Makic, Amra and Ramiz Bjelobrvic, Medina Salkic, Amela Akram, Irfeta Pobric, Hajrija Halilovic, Enisa Vugdalic , Zemka Zahirovic, Alma and Dino Hrncic, Enisa and Nedzad Osmanagic, Mirsada Pobric, Bekir and Halida Mujkic, Mediha Makic, Nesiba and Merima Kadralija, Suada and Cerim Alija and Ajsa Bjelobrvic for help with donating food and assistance and voluntary work during the day.

Flower Pot Arranging

03.02.2015

On Tuesday 20th January 2015, Flower Power workshop took place at Bosnia and Herzegovina Centre. This was organised by Hannah Stirland from Derby Refugee Advice Centre. Clients learnt how to create elegant bouquets which were then donated to care homes and hostels. The session was delivered by Joan Hall and Doreen Hinds. Their professionalism, generosity and kindness gave them a big fan club at Derby Refugee Advice Centre. I hope that the day gave them just as much joy as we felt. We learnt the names of flowers and foliage, plus colours and which seasons brought which blooms.

We all had a fabulous time and clients were talking about it throughout the afternoon. We delivered the bouquets at lunchtime. It was wonderful - great for integration, plus so creative and healing. It really had the feel-good-factor. There were 21 clients taking part, from countries including Syria, Kuwait, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Pakistan, Eritrea, Iran and South Africa.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2015

03.02.2015

On Tuesday, 27th January 2015, Bosnia and Herzegovina Community Association actively took part in another Holocaust Memorial Commemoration, 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Ceremony, which was this year themed "Keep The Memory Alive", was attended by senior officials including his Excellency the Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina in London Mustafa Mujezinovic, the Ambassador for Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, Mayor of Derby Shiraz Khan and Fedir Kurlak, chief executive and general secretary of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain.

Ceremony began at 3pm at Bridge Chapel, where reflection and meditation took place led by the Dean of Derby, the Very Rev Dr John Davies. From the Bridge Chapel the observance moved to the trees dedicated to Anne Frank and Olga Nahlak, on the green opposite the Bridge Chapel. Here, Iryna Bates from Derby's Ukrainian Community read her poem before stones were laid by the officials including his Excellency Mustafa Mujezinovic.

By 4:15pm, everybody gathered at Bosnia and Herzegovina Centre for the commemoration of the Bosnian war and 20th anniversary since Srebrenica genocide. Guests were addressed by the Chair of Bosnia and Herzegovina Community Association Nermina Webster before, at 4:30pm, Derby's 70th anniversary Holocaust memorial candle was lit by Medina Salkic, Srebrenica genocide survivor who lost her father, brother and many other male relatives and by Bahrudin Muhic, also a Srebrenica genocide survivor who lost his father and other relatives. This special candle was one of only 70 to be awarded to local groups by the national Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

Lighting the candle was followed by survivors biographies which were read by Hannah Stirland and Elliot Emery on behalf of survivors. Biographies were simultaneously accompanied by the Srebrenica genocide PowerPoint presentation. There was also a short presentation by Sam Barrett, member of Remembering Srebrenica organisation who recently visited Bosnia and Memorial Centre at Potocari. His Excellence Mustafa Mujezinovic and Mayor of Derby also delivered a short speech before everyone was able to enjoy traditional refreshments in the centre.

The flame from the 70th anniversary candle was preserved in a hurricane lamp and taken to the Cathedral by Ferid Kevric and Bahrudin Muhic where it was lit for the second time, by Russell Pollard in commemoration of the centenary of the Armenian genocide. Multi-faith service of commemoration in Derby Cathedral took place, with readings from the Bible and Qur'an. Readings from Qu'ran were recited by the Imam from Bosnian Community Ahmed ef. Gopo.

Last part of the ceremony took place at the QUAD. This was an evening of commemoration and celebration which included performances by communities that have found sanctuary and safety from persecution in Derby. The program opened by third lighting of the candle by Judy Sherwood and Isaac Pizer. The evening included the presentation of prizes to the winners of the school poster competition which was won by Sana Akram from Derby Bosnia and Herzegovina Supplementary School. Sara Akram, also from Derby Bosnia and Herzegovina Supplementary school, was presented with a special award for her effort too. "Bosnian Pearls" dance group represented Bosnia and Herzegovina Community with traditional dancing followed by three recitations read by Sara Akram, Sarah Gopo and Emina Hrncic and live performance on violin by Ursula Donnelly while the members of dance group, all dressed in traditional clothing, constructed the 11 petalled white flower of hope for Srebrenica. The whole of Bosnian Community's performance lasted for just over 12 minutes and was simultaneously accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation on Srebrenica Genocide.
